BEFRIENDERS News NOV/DEC 2025
November started with our AGM when our Chairperson Karen gave a report on the many exciting events which we had organised during the year. We all then enjoyed a lunch of jacket potato, with a choice of fillings, followed by an excellent dessert of apple crumble, made with apples from a volunteer’s garden.
At the end of November a shopping trip to Affinity Shopping Centre at Talke was organised. A full mini bus made its way from Loggerheads for some serious Christmas retail therapy. An enjoyable time was had by all, a lot of shopping was done, and following lunch everyone made their way back to Loggerheads. As an alternative, for those who didn’t want to shop, the usual Friday coffee morning took place where Befrienders played Bingo and a “pass the parcel” game.
December saw the start of the Christmas season and Befrienders love to celebrate. Our first outing was to Hugo Meynall School to enjoy a delicious Christmas lunch, followed by a concert given by the children. It is always pleasant to watch and listen to the youngsters performing. A big thank you to head teacher, Mrs. Gleave and her staff, for giving us a wonderful time.
Our Christmas party this year was held in Scholars Restaurant at the Marriot Hotel which is situated on the Keele University campus. Befrienders gathered in their sparkly clothes and fun jumpers ready to enjoy a selection of Christmas fayre. We were entertained by Jonathan on his ukulele, accompanied by his wife Pam. They played and sang a selection of traditional songs and carols. Everyone got into the spirit of Christmas and joined in. Several beautiful hampers were won during the raffle, organised by Anita, and Jan had knitted tiny Santa hats for everyone, each filled with a chocolate. Feeling very full and happy, we all agreed it had been an excellent Christmas Party, and gave our grateful thanks to the organisers, Anita, Anna, and Sue. We all left ready to enjoy the Christmas period with friends and family.
January started with a visit from Rebecca the granddaughter of two of our Friends. She gave a rendition of songs from popular musicals, and her beautiful voice kept us all enthralled as it rang out in the Chapel.
As well as the usual coffee mornings, on the first, third and fourth Fridays every month, held at Ashley Methodist Church between 10am and 12 noon, we hold a games afternoon every second Wednesday at the Fire station in Loggerheads, between 2pm and 4pm. Once a month we go out for lunch. We also run a walking group on a Thursday afternoon, starting out at 130pm with 3 levels of walks to suit most abilities.
There is always plenty going on when you join the Befrienders and something for everyone so come along and see what we can offer. You will always be offered a warm welcome.
